The Homestead Ranch is located just outside the town of Datil in southwestern New Mexico. The town of Datil is considered to be the gateway to the Gila National Fores which offers a variety of recreational activities including hunting and fishing, along with numerous wilderness areas, lakes, and historical sites.

The Homestead Ranch overlooks the panoramic Plains of San Augustine. The technologically famous Very Large Array, radio telescopes, can be seen from several of the hill tops of the ranch. Socorro, New Mexico, is within sixty miles of the ranch and has a hospital, university, restaurants, shopping, and an airport sufficient to handle light jet aircraft. The closest international airport is in Albuquerque which is approximately two hours from the ranch.

The Homestead Ranch consists of approximately 3,560 deeded acres and approximately 2,880 acres of state leased land. The ranch is accessed from a county road just two miles south of Highway 60. The entire ranch is fenced as a whole with no cross fencing. Electricity is available within a half mile, or so, of the property.

The Homestead Ranch has two wells around 350 feet in depth. Both wells are pumped by windmills and produce good water. There are a couple of pipelines that service drinkers for cattle. The ranch also has three dirt tanks of which on generally holds water year round. The ranch could handle approximately 60 to 70 head of mother cows year round. The current owner is interested in managing the ranch and maintaining the water and fences in exchange for running 20 head of his own. This could be beneficial to both parties if agreed upon.

The Homestead Ranch is located in Game management Unit 16E which is situated at the northeast corner of the Gila National Forest. This unit is open to rifle, muzzleloader, and bow hunting for elk. The deer and antelope hunting are open to rifle and bow. The Homestead Ranch is currently part of a larger ranch which receives 5 rifle bull elk permits, 5 archery bull elk permits, and 12 cow elk permits. In addition, the ranch currently receives 4 rifle antelope permits. The number of deer permits is unlimited. The majority of the elk permits will transfer with the purchase of the Homestead Ranch. The antelope permits will more than likely remain with the seller and the balance of the ranch not being sold. The seller would like the new owner of the Homestead Ranch to buy the remainder of the elk and antelope permits and take over the hunting on the entire ranch. The ranch has a lot of antelope and a resident herd of elk. In 2006 there was a 7 x 7 bull elk taken by a bow hunter on the ranch.

The Homestead Ranch is mostly made up of rolling hills which are covered with pinon pine and juniper and some scattered ponderosa pine. Parts of the ranch have some mountain mahogany and oak. There are a couple of open valleys and one loop road that will take you through some thick bedding areas for the game. The predominant grassed are grama grass and western wheat. There is some scattered chamisa and sage. The average rain fall is around fifteen to twenty inches per year and the average snow are from two to six inches at a time and melting within two to three days. The average summer temperatures are in the 70's and 80's with the night in the 50's. The winters are short lived with day time temperatures typically in the 30's and 50's and nights in the teens.

The Homestead Ranch has a history of its own dating back to the pioneers, the old west, and cattle drives across the San Augustine to the Trails End at Magdalena. There is one old homestead on the ranch from which it takes its name. The homestead may have been inhabited in the early 1900's by the looks of it. Pictures here is what is left of the old corrals. This is the land of the Navajo and the Apache and stone points and pottery chards can still be found on the ranch and in the surrounding area. The ancient civilizations and cultures of the area date back thousands of years.

The Homestead Ranch is a very easily accessed ranch being only two miles from a paved highway. There is a restaurant and gas station in Datil, which is only 4 miles away. Magdalena, just to the east, has a bit more to offer with a grocery store, bank, and clinic. All in all with its location, recreation value, and beauty this ranch is one that will surely increase in value over time.
